Living the dream in France
After my mother passed away aged 90, I found myself with an opportunity to pursue a long-held dream – moving to France. My mother had lived a full life, even in the face of Alzheimer’s and dementia, and I spent the last five years with her in Holland-on-Sea, Essex, so we could be closer to family.
When she was gone, it felt like the right time to begin a new chapter. France had always held a special place in my heart from many holidays over the years. While such a move might sound very bold to some, I knew I would regret it if I never tried.
My roots are in England – growing up in Dagenham, landing my dream role as a trainee journalist at the Guardian Gazette in Walthamstow at 20. Then moving on to the Basildon Evening Echo and later working freelance for national papers and companies. Alongside my love of writing, I’ve always enjoyed cooking (friends will tell you I’m known as a bit of a feeder!). I completed a City & Guilds Cooks Professional Course and ran a small catering business. Later on I set up an afternoon tea delivery service when I returned to live with my mum. Sadly, Covid meant closing that chapter to keep her safe, but it did give me the chance to take other work until I was ready to make a fresh start.
Sense of belonging
My home here in Western France almost seemed to find me. Although I initially overlooked the property as it was listed with only two en-suite bedrooms, something kept drawing me back. When I finally visited, I immediately felt at home. To my delight, I discovered it actually had three en-suites and ticked every box. The location is perfect! It’s a short stroll to the town centre and all the local amenities, including an open-air swimming pool. And, there is an unexpected bonus – beautiful Château de Javarzay, with public grounds, a fishing lake and wonderful walks for Harvey, my 10 year old cockerpoo.
Now, Harvey and I have settled into life in Chef-Boutonne. I’ve rekindled my love of cooking and made new friends – local and from abroad. Most importantly, I’ve discovered a real sense of belonging. I’m delighted to call Les Jonquilles my forever home and look forward to welcoming guests to experience it too.
